Courage is the most important of all the virtues, because without courage you can't practice any other virtues consistently. You can't be consistently kind or fair or humane or generous, not without courage, because if you don't have it, sooner or later you will stop and say, "The threat is too much. The difficulty is ...too high. The challenge is too great. ~ Maya Angelou

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

November 2, 2009

Is it time to have more than a "conversation" with Eanes ISD superintendent Nola Wellman regarding (as a board member asserts) her "repeated violations" of the Texas Open Meetings Act?

And another question:

Why is it so difficult for the board members to access the information that they need to do their job?

#1

Is it time to have more than a "conversation" with Eanes ISD superintendent Nola Wellman regarding (as a board member asserts) her "repeated violations" of the Texas Open Meetings Act (TOMA)?

This is a familiar issue for Nola Wellman.  In fact, a few years ago, the Eanes superintendent retained criminal defense attorneys (at taxpayer expense) when Eanes ISD was investigated by law enforcement for this very issue.  It's now documented that Nola Wellman knows the law.  And the question remains:  does she comply?

And one more thing ... the district tried to hide this email (see link below) from the public.  As usual, Nola Wellman hired private attorney Ellen Spalding who recently requested a ruling from the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) in an effort to withhold this document from public inspection.  The OAG disagreed and ruled that the document is public information and must be released.

Here's the link.

#2

It's not just the public that is left in the dark by the Eanes ISD administration.  Why is it so difficult for the board members to access the information that they need to do their job?

(And again, Nola Wellman retained private attorney Ellen Spalding in an effort to withhold this public information from the public.)

Here's the information ruled public by the OAG.
