Audio of the board appointment

Note: These audio recordings are user-friendly (unlike the audio recordings posted by Eanes ISD)and were recorded by Dianna Pharr on August 10, 2009 during the Eanes ISD board meeting as a public service.

Highlights from interview of new board member James (Kal) Kallison:

"I'm a major data seeker."

On being a board member:

"It means being very accessible to the community ... getting out and finding the kinds of needs the community has ... devoting a lot of your time and attention ... to the needs of the kids in the school district ... families that have children in the district and otherwise... make sure the people in this room ... don't make decisions in a vacuum.

On governance:

(The decision making process) "should be inclusive, open ... invitations to the public to speak on controversial issues such as special needs, that kind of thing.

"There's a lot of money involved ... (Board members should) make sure dollars are spent wisely."

"The process should be inclusive and open."

On children:

(Board members should) "make sure our schools are safe, our students are physically safe; they're emotionally safe."

"I've seen a lot of kids in the district get lost in the cracks because they don't have an edge ... In between the TAKS-driven instruction and athletics you have all these other venues that are very important and I think a lot of times those things get short-changed."

"A lot of different populations need to be served ... gifted ... at-risk ... special-needs ...

"There should be a mechanism that would allow every kid (to be) part of the Eanes community and I don't think that happens all the time."

Breaking News ...

(posted 2:45 p.m. Monday, August 10, 2009)

Eanes ISD appoints Dr. James (Kal) Kallison to open board position.

August 10, 2009 - 2:45 p.m. -

I was the lone member of the public in attendance at today's board meeting -- except for one brave mom who brought her two young Boy Scout sons to observe for an hour or so.  The media did not attend.   The meeting lasted from 7:30 a.m. until about 2.30 p.m.

After deliberating in closed session, the board appointed Dr. James (Kal) Kallison to the open board position. After listening to the nine interviews, I agree with the board's choice. Unfortunately, the board deliberated in closed session so I cannot report the specifics of their deliberations.

- Dianna Pharr
