Subject: Eanes ISD Community Update #18

April 19, 2006

Dear Eanes Friends,

Many public school districts benefit from the financial support of non profit education foundations. The Eanes Education Foundation (hereafter EEF) website states that nurses, librarians, counselors, GT teachers, Pre-AP and AP classes in addition to all middle and high school sports programs, are not required in the state of Texas. Rather, they are considered extras or luxuries.*  Last year the Eanes Education Foundation donated $500,000.00 to our district to fund teacher and staff positions. Thank you to those who contributed both your money and volunteer efforts!

Recently I had the opportunity to view and purchase a copy of the EEF accounting ledger.  It provided details of the costs associated with this organizations fundraising efforts. A representative sample of administrative and fundraising expenses are:

Executive Director - Lori Bolding

    - payroll $3,420.96 per month

    - health insurance $182.54 per month

    - Christmas bonus - $2,500.00

    - reimbursement for job related expenses

    - additional and separate contract with Eanes ISD,  Community Relations Coordinator $13,750.00 (25% time)

Fundraising SoftwareThe Raiser's Edge/Blackbaud Software

    - initial cost, training, maintenance and consulting approximately $23,000.00

Web Design- Eureka Software

    - initial purchase $9,600.00

Board Gifts-

    - approximately $897.00

Promotional Pencils - purchased from EISD Board member Jim Strickland

    - approximately $750.00

Meals/Refreshments-

    - Bistro 88 $442.86

    - Chick-Fil-A  $405.00

    - Canyon Cafe $453.24

    - Austin Catering $988.75

    - The Tavern $106.21

Gala '06

    - invitations $4,485.48

    - music $2,800.00

    - auctioneer $1,500.00

    - facility rental, flowers, decorations, food, open bar ??

Questions for consideration:

    -  Teacher, nursing, librarian, and gifted positions are considered annually for budget cuts. Why aren't reductions in sports related expenses considered or realized?

    -  Are district costs associated with sports (considered an extra luxury) rising at the same time EEF is struggling to provide support for other extras such as nurses, librarians, AP programming and gifted teachers?

I have copied the Eanes Education Foundation accounting ledger onto a CD that I will provide for community members interested in reviewing this information. Please contact me by return email if you would like a copy.

Wishing all the best for our students, our parents, our teachers and our taxpayers,

Susan Bushart
